On This Day:
Sunday February 2, 2014

This is the 33rd day of the year, with 332 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: faults

A fault, in geology, is a fracture in the rocks of the earth's crust, where compression or tension causes the rocks on the opposite sides of the fracture, or fault, to be displaced relative to each other. Faults may be vertical, horizontal, or inclined at any angle. They are classified according to their angle of inclination and their relative and apparent movement. It is believed that most, if not all, earthquakes occur along faults. The San Andreas Fault is approximately 800 miles long and is located in southern and western California.
