On This Day:
Saturday February 8, 2014

This is the 39th day of the year, with 326 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: fossil fuels

Fossil fuels are so called because they formed underground over millions of years from the fossilized remains of animals and plants. The three major forms are coal, oil, and natural gas. Approximately 85% of the United States' energy needs are met by fossil fuels, the nation consuming around 20 million barrels of oil per day. However, the earth has limited supplies of these fuels and they cannot be replenished once exhausted. The burning of fossil fuels by humans is the largest source of emissions of carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases that contributes to global warming.
