Fact of the Day: blinking The average person blinks about fifteen times per minute, nine hundred times per hour, and three hundred million times a lifetime. Blinking is influenced by a wide range of physical and mental states. We blink to keep the eyes lubricated, shield them from foreign bodies, and keep them crystal clear for good vision. Psychological studies have found that when a person is nervous, blinking becomes more frequent. It is reduced when a person is concentrating and alert. When a person is bored, the frequency and the duration of each blink increases.
