On This Day:
Thursday February 27, 2014

This is the 58th day of the year, with 307 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: carbohydrates

The body's main fuel, carbohydrate, comes in the form of sugars and complex carbohydrates including starch and cellulose. They can be broken down by enzymes to release energy in the body. Carbohydrates are probably the most abundant and widespread organic substances in nature, and are essential constituents of all living things; they are formed by green plants from carbon dioxide and water during the process of photosynthesis. Carbohydrates contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, occur in foods and living tissues, and form part of the structure of nucleic acids, which contain genetic information. The word carbohydrate literally means "watered carbon," from its general formula Cx(H2O)x.
