Fact of the Day: microscope Millions of tiny particles that play vital roles in our lives would go unobserved without the help of microscopes that magnify them to reveal details invisible to the naked eye. The simple microscope uses one lens, capable of magnifications of 70-250 times. Compound microscopes use combinations of two lenses for magnifications up to 2000 times the size of the object being viewed. Electron microscopes can magnify by hundreds of thousands of times. Dutch scientist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) is credited with inventing the simple microscope.

1812 - French emperor Napoleon entered Moscow, but found it deserted. After waiting a month for a surrender that never came, Napoleon, faced with the onset of the Russian winter, was forced to order his starving army out of Moscow. The Grande Armée finally escaped Russia, having suffered a loss of over 400,000 men during the disastrous invasion.
1814 - Francis Scott Key was inspired to write a poem, "The Star-Spangled Banner" when he witnesses an attack on Baltimore by a British fleet and the bombing of Fort McHenry. It later became the national anthem of the United States.
