quetzal, noun
quetzal

Many Latin American countries have national birds, just as the United States has its bald eagle. The Guatemalan national bird is the exotic and colorful quetzal. It features prominently on the Guatemalan flag and is also the name for the Guatemalan currency. It has iridescent green plumage on its upper parts, a red breast and belly, and a yellowish beak. One of the major gods of ancient Mexican religion was Quetzalcóatl, whose name means literally 'tail feather of the quetzal' and 'serpent', and who was represented as a plumed serpent.
