On This Day:
Friday September 20, 2013

This is the 263rd day of the year, with 102 days remaining in 2013.

Fact of the Day: coal

About 350 million years ago, huge trees grew in the warm, humid swamps that covered vast regions of the world. The trees soaked up the sun's energy to grow. When the trees died, their trunks were buried under layers of mud. As heat and pressure increased, these plant remains gradually converted into coal. When we burn coal today, the energy that the trees captured from the sun is released. Coal was the first fossil fuel (so called because of its origin) used by people.
