Fact of the Day: covered bridge A covered wooden bridge is a bridge made of timber whose passageway is protected by a roof and enclosing sides. Covered wooden bridges are popular in art and folklore, but they are also important in engineering history. Few engineering structures have captivated the American imagination like a covered wooden bridge. While there is little or no evidence of covered bridges in the ancient world, there are sketches of covered bridges going back to the 13th century. The first covered wooden bridge in the United States is credited to Timothy Palmer of Newburyport, Massachusetts, and spanned the Schuylkill River of Philadelphia in 1800. There are approximately 800 covered wood bridges in the United States.
