niño, noun
boy

Un niño is a boy and una niña is a girl, but a mixture of boys and girls together would be los niños (the children). Several other words behave this way in Spanish. For example un amigo is a friend (one who is male) and una amiga is a friend who is female, but you would refer to your friends in general as amigos.
