Santa Fe, the county and city of the same name in New Mexico, got their name from a Spanish phrase meaning holy faith (fe is a feminine noun meaning faith and the adjective santo means holy). The original name given in 1582 was la Cuidad de la Santa Fe de San Francisco, or the City of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis. This was later shortened to Santa Fe.
