apellido, noun
surname

In the Spanish-speaking world most people use two surnames, the first being their father's first surname, and the second their mother's first surname. For example the surname of the children of Juan García López, married to Carmen Pérez Rodríguez would be García Pérez. When women marry in Latin America they don't normally take the name of their husband but keep their own instead.
