We've already come across oficio meaning trade or job.

Es mecánico de oficio.
He's a mechanic by trade.

Oficio is also used in some rather formulaic phrases which it's worth getting to know.

Debe de conocer bien su oficio.
He must have a lot of experience in his job.
Son un grupo con mucho oficio.
They're a really professional group.

Gajes del oficio are the negative aspects of your job which you can't avoid, part and parcel of the job, or occupational hazards.

El juez se tomó el accidente con filosofía, ya que declaró que eran 'gajes del oficio'.
The judge was philosophical about the accident, as he said that it was an occupational hazard.
