Yesterday's Word - Previous Words - Help

régimen, noun
diet; régime

"You are what you eat", as the phrase has it. Lots of us are careful about what we eat, and go on diets. Régimen is a very common Spanish word for a diet:

Han decidido comenzar un régimen estricto.
They've decided to start a strict diet.

Notice how in English we say on a diet, but in Spanish we say a régimen:

Estoy a régimen desde la semana pasada.
I've been on a diet since last week.
Voy a ponerme a régimen.
I'm going to go on a diet.

In its other main meaning, régimen refers to the style of government of a country:

durante el régimen militar
under the military régime
Deseamos un régimen democrático para Cuba.
We want a democratic régime in Cuba.
