Like destapar, to uncover, tapar, to cover, derives from the noun for lid or covering, tapa.

La tapé con una manta.
I covered her with a blanket.

In some contexts it requires a different translation.

Tapa la olla.
Put the lid on the saucepan.
Bostezó y no hizo a tiempo de taparse la boca.
He yawned and he wasn’t quick enough to put his hand over his mouth.
