Fact of the Day: maps

Maps are used for different reasons and their style varies according to the purpose. Some are used to find a route, others record settlements and land division. Satellite maps record landscape features of parts of the earth's surface. The first map we know of was made in Babylon around 2500 BC. Mapmaking was revolutionized in the 15th century by explorers as they increased their knowledge of the globe. Most maps have a range of symbols, known as conventions, that are easily recognizable. The main conventions used are colors, different typefaces, and symbols. They are explained in the map's key or legend.
