On This Day:
Thursday November 21, 2013

This is the 325th day of the year, with 40 days remaining in 2013.

Fact of the Day: Stonehenge

Stonehenge is an ancient monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, the remains of four massive trilithons surrounded by concentric circles of megaliths, probably constructed c. 3100 BC. Stonehenge is architecturally unique and underwent three phases of construction. The first phase, Stonehenge I, began around 3100 BC. The second phase, Stonehenge II, began around 2100 BC, and the third phase, Stonehenge III, around 2000 BC. The reasons for its design and construction are not known, but according to most theories it was a place of worship. Archaeologists have long been fascinated by this monument because it gives evidence of massive manpower input; one calculation suggests that Phase III alone took 30 million man-hours to construct.
