Typically it begins high in the mountains and, as it runs downhill, is joined by more rainwater and swells first into a stream and then into a river. Rivers can be categorized into three types: perennial (water flows year round), seasonal (water flows only part of the year), and ephemeral (usually dry). The Nile is the longest river in the world, covering a distance of 4,132 miles.
