Fact of the Day: Ivy League colleges The Ivy League is a group of eight colleges and universities in the northeastern United States that are widely regarded as high in academic and social prestige. The following institutions make up the Ivy League: Harvard University (1636), Yale University (1701), University of Pennsylvania (1740), Princeton University (1746), Columbia University (1754), Brown University (1764), Dartmouth College (1769), and Cornell University (1865). The Ivy League was so named with reference to the ivy traditionally growing over the walls of the college buildings. Ivy League is originally a sportswriter's term, but it has nothing to do with the number four. The term was first used in 1937 by sportswriter Caswell Adams of The New York Herald-Tribune in reference to the unofficial conference of teams also known as the Old Ten. The teams were Army, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Navy, Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Yale. In 1940, Army and Navy dropped out of the association and the membership has remained the same ever since.

1978 - California Congressman Leo Ryan and four other people were killed in Jonestown, Guyana, by members of the Peoples Temple. They had gone there to investigate the religious sect of Jim Jones, a U.S. pastor. The next night there was mass murder and suicide by 912 cult members.
1987 - The Iran-Contra committee of Congress said in their final report that President Ronald Reagan bore "ultimate responsibility" for wrongdoing of his aides.
1991 - The Shi'ite Muslim faction Islamic Jihad freed Church of England envoy Terry Waite and U.S. university professor Thomas Sutherland.
2004 - Britain outlawed fox hunting with hounds in England and Wales.
