exigir, verb
to demand

If someone wants to put their foot down and demand something, exigir is the verb they need.

Exigió hablar con el encargado.
He demanded to speak to the manager.

In the previous example the object was an infinitive, but you can also use exigir with a noun:

Exijo respeto.
I demand respect.
¡Te exijo una explicación!
I demand an explanation.

If you demand that somebody else do something, you use exigir que and the subjunctive:

Por ello exigen que el Banco de España baje* el precio del dinero.
That’s why they’re demanding that the Bank of Spain reduces the cost of money.
