semestre, noun
six-month period, half year

In English we’re used to thinking of a semester in relation to college courses. Spanish el semestre can mean this too, but it also has a more general meaning of a six-month period, or half year. In this meaning people often use it when talking about finance and economics. So, they often use with primer, segundo, último and próximo ? first, second, last, and next.

Durante el primer semestre del año la empresa obtuvo un beneficio neto de 57 millones de dólares.
In the first half of the year, the company made a net profit of 57 million dollars.
