mirada, noun
look

La mirada is the noun from mirar, and means a look.

una mirada triste
a sad look

In English you use verbs to express what you do with your gaze, for instance, to look up, to look away, and so forth. In Spanish you often express the same idea with la mirada and a verb. For example:

levantar la mirada
to look up
bajar la mirada
to look down
desviar la mirada
to look away
Nadie levantó la mirada para verla.
Nobody looked up to see her.
