Holy week – First Period Recovering Workshop

This workshop has to be handed in on the first day of classes after Holy Week.

FIRST PART: WRITING
Exercise 1: Copy the entire passage.

Morning
            1It’s morning in the park. 2A young man is walking with his dog. 3Every day he buys a newspaper at the newsstand. 4The news dealer greets him. 5The man takes his newspaper to a nearby bench. 6He sits by himself and reads. 7His dog runs in the trees.

Exercise 2: Rewrite the entire passage, but change young to old in sentence 1, and change nearby to empty in sentence 5.
Exercise 3: Rewrite the entire passage, but change A young man to A young lady in sentence 2.
Exercise 4: Rewrite the entire passage, but change A young man to Two young men in sentence 2.
Exercise 5: Rewrite the entire passage, but change morning to yesterday morning in sentence 1, and take out the words Every day in sentence 3.
Exercise 6:
Copy the entire passage in your notebook.
English is Tough
1English is an extraordinary language. 2 Sometimes it is simple and sometimes it is complex.
            3It has a very rich vocabulary. 4If a person wants to describe a simple thing, he can find simple words. 5On the other hand, if a person wants to talk about a very complicated thing, he can think of the right words.
            6English has a difficult sound system and a ridiculous spelling system. 7There are 14 vowel sounds and 26 consonant sounds in English, but there are only 26 letters in the alphabet. 8This makes reading and writing a real problem.
            9An exceptional student can learn English in a few months, but the most people need more time.
Exercise 7: Rewrite the entire passage
but change the following words: Change extraordinary to curious in sentence 1; change very to extremely in sentence 3; change simple to uncomplicated in sentence 4; change think of to come up with in sentence 5; change ridiculous to stupid in sentence 6; and change exceptional to superior in sentence 9.

Copy the complete passage in your notebook.
Explode the Myths
1The following are true:
            2Dragons were intelligent.
            3Columbus discovered America
            4Life was easier in times past.
            5Methusalah lived for 969 years.
            6When kissed by the princess, the frog turned into a prince.
            7People worked harder in the old good days.
            8Ponce de Leon found the Fountain of Youth.
            9World War II brought everlasting peace.
            10Men from Mars landed in New Jersey.
            11Henry VIII had eight wives.
Exercise 2: Change the myths to facts by making each statement negative.
Sentences 1 and 2 will be:
            The following are true:
                        Dragons weren’t intelligent.
Exercise 9
Copy the entire passage in your notebook.
Free – Lancing
            1Jan Holmes is a free – lance writer. 2She doesn’t work in an office for one company. 3She doesn’t have a steady job. 4Instead, she works at home.
            5Jan writes articles and sends them to different magazines. 6Sometimes a magazine chooses to print one. 7The the magazine pays for it.
            8Jan finds pleasure in this kind of work. 9Nobody tells her when to work. 10Nobody tells her what to write. 11She can be as ambitious or as lazy as she wants. 12Free – lance writing is the right work for her.

Exercise 10: Rewrite the complete passage,
But change Jan to John. Write about a man instead of a woman throughout the passage. Sentence 1 will be:
            John Holmes is a free - lance writer.
Exercise 11: Pretend that this person lived in the past.
Rewrite the complete passage in past time. Sentence 1 will be:
            Jan Holmes was a free – lance writer.
Exercise 12
Copy the entire passage in your notebook.

To Marry or Not

1A young woman gives the opinion on weddings:
2”Weddings are simply expensive affairs. 3They’re meaningless. 4A wedding is only a show for parents. 5It’s just an old-fashioned idea. 6Two people can live together happily without a legal wedding.”
7A young man talks about marriage
8”A couple should live together before marriage. 9It’s a good way for two people to know each other. 10Afterwards, they can really make a wise decision. 11Young people’s views on marriage are very different from their parents’ views. 12A young person is wiser about marriage than his parents.”

Exercise 13: Rewrite the entire passage in your notebook,
but change the following words: Change show to event in sentence 4; change old-fashioned to traditional in sentence 5; change legal to official in sentence 6; change good to excellent in sentence 9; and change wise to intelligent in sentence 10.
Exercise 14: Rewrite the entire passage in your notebook,
But change A young woman to An old woman in sentence 1, and change A young man to An old man in sentence 7. These two old people have the opposite opinions from young people. Change all the sentences in the quotations to NEGATIVE. However, DO NOT change sentences 1 and 7 to negative. Sentences 1 and 2 will be:
            An old woman gives her opinion on weddings:
                        “Weddings aren’t simply expensive affairs.

LISTENING PART
Listen to all the videos, study them and be ready to answer questions about them












And don't forget to answer the questionaries on lessons 2 and 3 from the book.
I will ask questions about the book too, for the second period.
