AIC International Students Scholarships Programme in China, 2013/2014
Alcanta International College (AIC) is offering scholarships for international students to excel at AIC and beyond. Students who apply to any AIC programme as full-time international students are eligible to apply for these scholarships. All scholarships apply only to the tuition fee. Three types of scholarships are available namely academic scholarships, merit scholarships and financial scholarships which are valued up to 100% of the tuition fee, 50% of the tuition fee and 30,000 RMB respectively. Applications must be postmarked by April 17, 2013.

2013/2015 Government of the UAE, IRENA Scholarship Programme for International Students
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is now accepting applications for IRENA scholarship programme for 2013-2015 academic years. The scholarship is open for the international students to pursue any one of the eight MSc courses at MASDAR Institute of Science and Technology, UAE. MSc scholars will also work on a research project relevant to renewable energies in order to complete Master thesis. Total 20 full scholarships are available. Application will be closed on 31st May 2013.

Women candidates who have already applied to the full-time IMD MBA program and who demonstrate financial need are eligible One scholarship is offered of CHF 25,000. Application should be submitted till September 30.

¿El sueño americano?

—¿Por qué vive en Nueva York, Margarita?, le pregunto a esta paisa dicharachera, cuarentona, robusta y buena moza que consiguió la residencia pagándole $40 millones a un latino de nacionalidad americana para que se casara con ella y le pidiera permiso a la inmigración para llevarla a EE.UU.
—¡Eh, ave María, yo no sé, mija!, exclama, en lágrimas, esta mujer que llegó a EE.UU. tras el sueño americano y, por eso, dejó en Medellín a su única hija —universitaria ya— y se gana la vida aseando apartamentos de prisa con el fin de completar los US$700 mensuales que paga de arriendo, más lo necesario para sufragar servicios, transporte y alimentación.
Hace tres años ella era allá vendedora de electrodomésticos, ganaba más del salario mínimo, vivía con su madre y su hija y, si necesitaba algo extra, se lo pedía a su exmarido, el padre de la niña, un campesino adinerado que sólo estudió primaria, posee una mina de oro que le vende el metal al Banco de la República, gana lo suficiente para mantener bien a sus ocho mujeres y a sus diez hijos, y sueña con convencerlos un día de que compartan los 18 con él la misma casa.
Sin embargo, Margarita quería más... Deseaba que su hija pudiera migrar y vivir una mejor vida que la suya.
—Y su hija, ¿quiere vivir en EE.UU., Margarita?
—¡Ella no!, exclama, y llora porque el trabajo que le pintó la prima que le consiguió el “marido” gringo y la convenció de viajar a EE.UU. no resultó como esperaba, pues quienes iban a emplearla prefirieron a una aseadora bilingüe.
—Entonces ¿qué hace en EE.UU., Margarita?
—Es que yo no quiero perder esos 40 millones que ya pagué; y si me voy ahora me quitan la residencia, dice, luego de contarme que su hija le ruega que vuelva y que su exmarido le promete darle un empleo en el que se ganaría cerca de un millón de pesos.
—¿Y qué le importa perder esa plata si usted no tiene un buen trabajo en Nueva York, no es feliz en EE.UU. y su hija tampoco lo es lejos de usted?, le digo.
—¡Verdad!, exclama y me da un abrazo.
Cinco meses después la invito a almorzar en Queens... En medio de una nevada ocurrida en los albores de esta primavera, caminamos por la Avenida Roosevelt, famosa por estar poblada de todo lo colombiano —oficinas que envían dólares a Colombia; tiendas de ropa que exhiben y anuncian jeans levantacolas made in Colombia; bares donde ofrecen Aguardiente Antioqueño y Ron Viejo de Caldas; mercados que venden Chocoramo, Areparina, arequipe de antaño y bocadillo veleño; restaurantes especializados en platos caleños, otros en tamales y lechona tolimenses y varios en fríjoles antioqueños; y hasta bailaderos de vallenatos y cafeterías donde no faltan los televisores sintonizados en alguna telenovela colombiana.
Luego de que Margarita ordena una bandeja paisa en La Pequeña Colombia, me cuenta que decidió regresar a su tierra. Entonces me entero de que su matrimonio de mentiras se volvió de verdad (como ocurre usualmente con esos matrimonios postizos, que de tanto aparentar ser pareja acaban siéndolo); y que ella le tomó cariño al tipo pero que no lo ama.
—Y al fin, ¿por qué quiso vivir en EE.UU., Margarita?, le pregunto antes de despedirme.
—¡No fue ni siquiera por plata, mija! Fue por lograr el sueño americano...
Similar a la suya es la historia de tantos millones de latinos que por perseguir ese sueño que nos han vendido como enlatado, no hacen más que trabajar y trabajar en USA, pero no son felices...

The Fifty States

The fifty
states of the United States, or the USA, join to make one nation. The United
States did not always have fifty states. At first there were thirteen. As the
United States grew, more states joined the union. The last two states to join
were Alaska and Hawaii. They both joined in 1959.
The area of
the United States covers every type of land. There are forests, deserts,
mountains, and flat land. The area of the United States also covers every type
of climate. The size of each state is different too. Alaska is the biggest
state. Rhode Island is the smallest state. Alaska is 500 times bigger than
Rhode Island.
About 250
million people live in the United States. The people of the United States come
from all over the world. People name cities after where they come from. For
example, in the United States you find Paris, Rome, Delhi, and Frankfurt. The
state with the highest population is California. The state with the lowest population
is Alaska.
Each state
has its own name. The name gives the state its identity and personality. More
than half the states have names from American Indian origin. Each state also
has a flag with colors that have a special meaning for the state. The flag is
the emblem, or symbol, of the state. There is also a state flower, tree, and
bird.
